The State of Maine in the United States has been the victim of a cyberattack.

The entire state fell victim to a cyber intrusion orchestrated by a Russian hacking collective.

The state reports that a well-known vulnerability in the secure transfer service MOVEit Transfer led to the compromise of personal information for over 1.3 million individuals. Unfortunately, the Cl0p ransomware gang, based in Russia, actively exploits this vulnerability, posing a significant threat to the residents of Maine

The State of Maine Hacked in 2023 What Happened?

The assault occurred on May 28th and 29th, revealing sensitive citizen information such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and other personal data maintained by the state. There were many that have their medical and health insurance information compromised. The statement said the state of Maine holds information about residents “for various reasons, such as residency, employment, or interaction with a state agency,” and that the data it holds varies by person.

The state disclosed that over 50% of the pilfered files originated from their Department of Health and Human Services, with a significant portion also traced back to their Department of Education. Other agencies affected by the breach include the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Department of Corrections.

A spokesperson for the state said that the total number of Maine residents that had data leaked was around 530,000, or about forty percent of the entire population of the state. All the other information was of people who aren’t current residents of the state.

MOVEit file transfer systems face persistent security challenges, resulting in the compromise of files belonging to over 69 million individuals, leading to unauthorized access or data leaks. The CI0P ransomware gang in dozens of attacks over the past calendar year.
